1. Calcium Intake. About 80% of all kidney stones are composed of minerals especially calcium that is usually in combination with oxalate. Calcium is actually used by the body for many important functions, however an excess of it will be absorbed by our kidneys. The biggest portion of calcium in the diet comes from milk and dairy products such as cheese and yogurt.

Other sources would include dark green leafy vegetables that have significant amount of calcium. We could also get calcium from over-the-counter medicines and vitamins. Too much calcium in the urine is medically known as hypercalciuria that could be prevented by regulating the amount of calcium in the diet.

2. Oxalate Intake. Oxalates are usually found in the intestines as with calcium. The presence of oxalates reduces calcium absorption while its formation is caused by the insufficient amount of calcium in the intestines. The excess number of oxalates will also be absorbed by the kidneys and too much this is known as hyperoxaluria.


There are many foods that contain large amounts of oxalate. Eight of these would be the major source for raising urine oxalate levels namely rhubarb, spinach, strawberries, chocolate, wheat bran, nuts, beets and tea. Other oxalate-rich foods would include beans, celery, fruit cake, egg plant, sweet potato, and wheat bran among others.

3. Minimize Sugar, Sodium, Animal Protein and Vitamin C. Too much sugar, sodium and animal protein intensify the production of calcium or calcium oxalate stones. Whereas, excessive vitamin C intake increases oxalate production.

Prevention is much more preferred rather than treatment of any diseases. If we love our health, stay away from kidney stones – foods not to eat should be out from our diet!
